Step-Up
Designed for step parents to help facilitate their new parenting role and communicate with there children and spouse.
Project Length
(4 Weeks) The project was started with a one week design sprint, from there iterations with stakeholders took another two weeks. One final week to do final testing. A total of four weeks.
Responsibilities
I created storyboards, wireframing, interacted with development for technical feasibility, created a low-fidelity prototype, and iterated with key stakeholders through development.
Overview
Problem: New parents coming into a family via marriage who need extra help with communication skills for parenting.
Goal: Have an app that helps two families come together as a team to help raise kids as a the new parent.
Research
I began this projects research by conducting polls with a great turn out of just under 300 participants. The data from the participants was split into three groups. Each group represented a specific type of step parent (one has no kids, one has a kid, and both parents have kids). This gave great insight into the problems that each group of parents has. The main question asked from each group was, "What do you wish you knew at the start of the relationship when becoming a step parent or bringing a new parent in." This question was asked four times so that there were multiple options. This gave an imense amount of data but in the end it broke down to about eight yes or no questions and five questions that you have to write in.
Personas
Because of the data from the polls personas were one of, if not the most important part of this project I put alot of work into perfecting them. These personas help guide me through the designs and choices made before each iteration.
Design
Parents are always on the move and busy. With that in mind the design focuses on simplicity and ease of use. The colors chose where picked to make the user feel comfortable with the app from the start and help distinguish sections. One example is the area where you make notes and write in your answers, make to look like a note pad.
